Santorini – Getting A Scooter

Santorini We were hoping to arrive in Santorini on a slow ferry during the day but due to high winds our mid-morning ferry was cancelled (which we didn’t realize until 1pm, we just thought it was two hours late). Luckily there was another boat going later, arriving at about 9:30pm (Greek ferry time = 10:45pm). We had a harder time dealing with the hotel touts here because we had an idea of where we wanted to stay (Perissa), how much we wanted to pay (about 20 euros) and what we wanted to get (wireless internet, a/c and ensuite) but the touts just wanted to pile us in their vans and...

The Greek Islands – and Trying to Get A Scooter

Samos Our first impressions of Greece were coloured by the fact we arrived from Turkey on a Sunday. In Greece, well in Samos at least, everything is closed on Sunday. We also discovered that the next day was White Monday, a holiday. Turns out, everything is closed on holidays as well. We considered getting out of Samos as quickly as possible – likely to one of the more touristy islands where hopefully White Monday wouldn’t have the same effect, but we had already booked a hotel and left our passports with the manager while he was preparing the room so we considered ourselves...

Who wants a postcard?

If you’re eager to use your mailbox for something other than flyers, bills, and your returned ‘Get Well Soon’ cards addressed to Britney, we’d love to send you a postcard. No guarantee on the date of delivery or the country of origin; we’ll send it when we find the one with your name on it. While waiting will be difficult, the sooner you send us your mailing address, at postcards@ourjourney.ca, the sooner your very own postcard may arrive.

Rental Cars, Pirates and Calcium

When we last left you, we were in Kas enjoying the warm Turkish sun with Carmen and Geoff (two of Allison’s friends). As a group of four we decided to rent a car to visit the near-by, and very highly recommended, Patara beach and Saklikent gorge. After running through the rental formalities, I was selected to drive for insurance purposes. After stalling the car three times, I decided to roll dangerously close to two other rental vehicles to demonstrate my superior ability to drive standard. After shifting the car from 3rd to 1st, and one more stall for good measure, we were on our...

Why Us Canadians Don’t Hate Turkey: Istanbul & Göreme

When we got off the tram in Sultanahmet, Istanbul we knew we were going to like it! We had moved from Amman, Jordan, one of the armpits of the universe, to a beautiful albeit touristy European city in the matter of a few hours. Our friends, Carmen & Geoff had recommended a cute and well located hostel and we were quick to ditch our bags and explore the city. We spent three and a half days in Istanbul exploring the sights. The Turkish government has decided that basically every attraction in Turkey costs 10 YTL (about 8 CADs) for entry regardless of its size, importance, etc. The...
