Wield Ultimate Packing Power

Fuelled by delicious K2,000 ($0.70 CAD) espresso from a magical place called Wonderbake in downtown Livingstone (Zambia), I decided to pen a deeper contemplation on what we’ve been hauling around the world. I’m not going to run through the basics—Allison covered that at the start of our trip; I’m going to touch on our rarely mentioned, but legendarily useful items. Mesh packing bags, from Mountain Equipment Coop, about $12-15 These medium-sized bags are a fantastic way to organize your clothes inside a large backpack. I have pants/shorts in one, shirts in another, and...

The Long and (Sometimes) Winding Road

When we left our lovely little Vancouver apartment on April 30 it was bittersweet. I loved that apartment, it was wonderful in so many respects. But I also loved that we were embarking on our adventure! My emotions flip-flopped all morning, and in the end excitement won out as we blared Paul Brandt’s “Didn’t Even See the Dust” as we started off down the highway. What on earth are we bringing?

I have learnt both from experience and from hours of procrastinating while reading travel sites that packing a backpack is both a science and an art.  Travel Independent has an excellent list of what you actually need when you carry your life on your back – I also have taken great joy in the preparations of Snarky in Africa, most especially her post about using solver to pick her shoes!  Due to the places we are going and our budget we have decided to bring a tent with us.  I know that this will get many strong reactions, both positive and negative, but in order to finance our year...

Divesting ourselves…

Divesting ourselves…

I just finished my last exam of my student career (at least for the forseeable future) and I am feeling a little weird about that. Rather than being incredibly excited I am eerily calm about the whole thing.  After three years, thousands of dollars,  and hours and hours of work I thought that this would have been a more remarkable feeling.  Maybe it hasn’t hit home yet because I still have a final edit of my 40 page research paper to do… Regardless of how I feel about being done law school, I’m feeling incredibly excited about Wednesday when we leave to first, drive...

Ticket Buying and Route Planning

So much goes into planning a trip like this, and rather than studying for Professional Responsibility I am going to share the mountain of information I have acquired during the planning phase! Purchasing a ticket planning the route goes hand in hand so I am going to deal with them together in this blog post.  Before looking into tickets we spend hours and hours discussing where we wanted to go and came up with a list of “must-sees”, those were: Africa, the Greek Islands, Dubai, Australia in December and South America.  One of the first questions people ask us is always...
