Turning Twenty-Six In Transit (Trying to Take Lake Tanganika)
Since the beginning of our trip whenever asked what I have been looking to most I have answered “taking the ferry MV Liemba up Lake Tanganika.” I’m not sure why I picked this, for in reality I’m not sure it was actually the thing I was most excited about (I’m quite sure that is, in fact, Machu Piccu). However, it was something concrete, something soon, and something that not a lot of tourists do. The Lonely Planet has some very limited information about the boat (that it leaves on Friday afternoon and costs $60 for a first class ticket). The internet...

When I left off last, we were on our Nomad overland tour in Etosha National Park, Namibia with one week left to go. Our first stop in Botswana was simply in transit and it was sad – it was at a game farm. The pacing cheetahs broke my heart. To add insult to injury, these are the only cheetahs we have seen in Africa, so I guess we need not have worried about being eaten by them… This stop was simply en-route to the best part about Botswana: our three-day mokoro (dug-out canoe) adventure into the Okavango Delta. After a 2-hour drive along dusty roads we arrived in the delta...

After spending three amazing weeks in South Africa, being completely and totally independent with our own rental car, we switched gears completely and joined and overland tour. Though we generally don’t join tours, we made this decision after hours of internet research indicated it is very expensive to get to the good sites in Namibia and Botswana without your own wheels . Since it is impossible to drop off a South African rental car in Zimbabwe, we booked our tour and on September 7th we were on our way. If you aren’t familiar with the concept of overlanding, it is basically a...

Though three weeks in South Africa was not enough time at all (take note anyone planning on visiting), it was enough to convince me that it is an amazing place. As any local or visitor to the region will say, there are some horrifying things here – notably the vast vast gap between rich and poor (sadly, generally along racial lines) and the devastating effect that HIV/AIDS is having on this part of the world – but there are many more wonderful things. Neither Jon nor I really knew what to expect when getting off the plane in Johannesburg, in our airport transfer to Pretoria we...

We’re off on our 20 day Cape Town to Victoria Falls! As our overland truck is sadly lacking satellite internet, we are going to be off-line for the next while. Don’t worry, we weren’t eaten by cheetahs. Well, maybe we will be / have been. If you don’t hear from us after a few months, consider curtailing your donations to wildlife foundations; the animals are obviously alive and well fed.

We arrived in Mauritius on August 14th after a very long (12 hours) but very comfortable (half empty plane = one row to lie down across and sleep on per person) BA flight. When coming up with our itinerary we had decided that Mauritius was going to be a “vacation” from our travels, and it was. We had pre-arranged accommodation and an airport transfer so getting off the plane was a very calm experience! We arrived at our small-14 room-hotel where we found out that the ocean view studio we had booked was full so we put into a huge 2 bedroom apartment with 2 ocean view balconies! ...
